This set of textbook readers was used in the schools of the United States till 1970s. It was the first reading series to enforce strict vocabulary control over selections. William S. Gray, a renowned educational psychologist and reading authority from the University of Chicago became a senior co-author with William H. Elson in creating this series.

The authors have attempted to provide an interesting, purposeful, and comprehensive reading course for children. To achieve this purpose the authors have assembled materials from the worldwide field of children’s favorite readings. Thus basic reading attitudes and habits are developed through the purposeful use of interesting and significant content. 今年《新少年》杂志创刊，朋友说其中应该有这么一栏，选一些好的文章给少年们读读。这件事由我担任下来，按期选一篇文章，我在后边说些话，栏名叫作“文章展览”。现在汇编成这本小书，才取了“文章例话”的名称。为了切近少年的意趣和观感，我只选现代人的文章。这许多文章中间有些是文艺作品，但是我也把它们看作普通文章，就普通文章的道理跟读者谈谈。
